Beauty Bites

     They say "You are what you eat" and although this isn't true in the most literal of terms, it definitely has some truth behind it.  Your diet can greatly affect your appearance in more ways than just weight gain and loss.  So to look your best this summer we've compiled a list of some beauty enhancing foods and their benefits. Drink up!

     Although it isn't a food, water should be a main part of everyone's diet.  When you don't drink enough water it affects many areas of the body including your digestive system, muscles and skin.  As far as your outwardly appearance goes, dehydration can make your skin appear more dry and wrinkled.

Shiny strands.

     Omega-3 fatty acids are extremely beneficial to the scalp and in turn, add shine to your hair.  Salmon is rich in omega-3's, as well as walnuts and almonds.  Spinach is loaded with iron, among many other nutrients and antioxidants, which helps blood reach the hair follicle more effectively and is great for combating hair loss and promoting hair growth.

Radiant skin.

     Blueberries are incredibly high in antioxidants and protect skin from premature aging, even  just half a cup a day can make a big difference in your diet.  Lycopene is the essential antioxidant that gives tomatoes their color.  Because tomatoes are rich in lycopene, when consumed regularly they provide your body with a natural sunscreen starting from the inside out.  Lycopene is also known to increase collagen amounts and firm the skin, which can ultimately reverse signs of aging.

Bright smile.

     Eating celery is natural method for whitening your teeth.  It's crunchy abrasiveness removes stains from teeth without affecting your enamel.  It is also beneficial in eliminating bad breath by cleansing bacteria from the back of the tongue when consumed.  It doesn't hurt that it's considered a "negative calorie" food, meaning that you actually burn more calories eating it than you take in.  Kiwis contain more Vitamin C than any other fruit.  Vitamin C helps keep the collagen strong in your gums, making you less susceptible to gum disease and bacteria.

Strong nails.

     Beans are a great source of biotin, which has been proven to increase the thickness of the nail.  Increased nail thickness means your nails are less likely to split. Both beans and green peas provide you with a good amount of protein, as well.  Protein makes your nails grow faster and strengthens them.
